Rosa Khutor Opens

Rosa Khutor

Rosa Khutor opened today, December 24, for skiing and snowboarding.  The gondolas across the mountain brought skiers up to enjoy the snow that has been falling for the last few weeks.  Locals have been looking forward to this for weeks and the recent showing of the snowboard film, The Art of Flight, had many people primed to take to the mountains.

Sochi Posters

Mephisto Waltz - Performance at the Winter Theater

I am interested in poster art and posters can be an effective way to reach an audience.  I have long had an interest in political posters, including from the Spanish Civil War and World War II,  as well as those  advertising films.

Recently, I have noticed posters displayed in Sochi to advertise musical and theatrical events and also to convey messages of public health.  Sochi is using both informative posters in public places, like bus stops, to tell people that smoking is forbidden there and posters with a bigger message that warn of the dangers of smoking.  There are several dramatic examples of those around the city.

In a nation with a large number of smokers, I am glad to see that the city is taking an interest in reducing public smoking and in educating of the dangers.

Moscow Holiday Season

Saint Basil's Cathedral and Red Square

I was in Moscow this week and enjoyed the city, its beauty and the season's excitement. There has been much made of protests, but I saw none of that.  There is no other season in Moscow like winter and the streets were full of people heading to meet friends, going to parties and shopping for the holidays. Tuesday, I went to Red Square and photographed St. Basils Cathedral, with its fantastically-colored onion domes, in a thick snowfall.

 Hotel National

The hotels near Red Square were full of business travelers and guests for holiday parties.  The Ritz Carlton had a function with Paul McCartney at the O2 Lounge and GUM, the beautiful shopping center next to Red Square, was busy with shoppers buying New Year gifts.

Sochi Street Performers

Sochi, Russia has a number of locations where musical performers can be heard out of doors.  The street underpass near the Moskva Hotel, the park across the street from the main railway station and my favorite, the Kurortniy Prospekt underpass several blocks up the hill from the Mosckva Hotel.  I like the street performers in Moscow and Saint Petersburg; they can often be found, especially during warm weather.  But Sochi has been a surprise because it is a much smaller city.
